Bharathanatyam is one of the oldest and most revered classical dance forms of India. References to it can be found in the Tamil epic Silappatikaram, dated around 171 CE, while temple sculptures from the 6th to 9th centuries CE suggest that dance had become a refined performance art by the mid-1st millennium CE in Tamil Nadu. Known for its grace, expressive storytelling, and intricate footwork, Bharathanatyam is more than just a dance—it is a spiritual journey and a profound artistic tradition.
Dancers wear colorful silk costumes with pleats that fan out during movements. They also wear traditional jewelry, flowers, and expressive makeup. The dance is accompanied by Carnatic music and instruments like the mridangam, flute, violin, and nattuvangam.
