Nattuvangam is the rhythmic and vocal accompaniment that plays a vital role in Bharathanatyam performances. It is the art of reciting rhythmic syllables (sollukattus) and playing the cymbals (also called talam or nattuvangam cymbals) in perfect coordination with the dancer’s movements.
Performed by the Nattuvanar—traditionally the guru or conductor—Nattuvangam serves as the guiding force that holds the performance together, maintaining tempo, rhythm, and synchronization between the dancer, the music, and the audience.
